Erectile Dysfunction
Background
10% of men experience erection problems. These may involve difficulty with getting an erection or with maintaining an erection.
Most men experience occasional erectile dysfunction, which can be associated with stress or tiredness, but when experienced consistently for over three months we recommend it should be reviewed.
Our Approach
First of all we exclude metabolic and neurological conditions which can cause impotence, erectile dysfunction, reduced libido and male menopause.
Our specialist Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) physician will discuss the causes of sexual dysfunction and advise on the treatment which may involve advice, psychosexual counselling, sex therapy or medication such as Viagra or Cialis.
The STD doctor may prescribe or dispense either Viagra (sildenafil) or Cialis (tadalafil), which are both effective and safe. They can be used to treat the problem either in the long term or they can be useful in the short term to regain lost confidence. In some cases we may recommend using these sexual stimulants diagnostically: Depending upon their effect we can tell a lot about the cause of the problem.
Our GUM doctor may advise psychosexual therapy if appropriate which you can attend with or without a partner. This may involve one or two sessions to help with stress or anxiety management or more in-depth therapy tp analyse relationship issues or look at traumas from the past which may be affecting the present.
