How to Prevent the Flu at Work

Flu season can be a challenging time for workplaces, with millions of people in the UK alone falling ill each year. However, there are proactive steps you can take to protect yourself and others from the flu.

1. Get the Flu Jab

Getting vaccinated is the most effective measure you can take to prevent the flu. The flu jab significantly reduces your risk of becoming one of the estimated 10 million UK residents who contract the flu annually. Flu vaccines are approximately 50-60% effective, and while they may not completely eliminate the risk, they substantially lower the chances of severe illness and hospitalisation.

2. Wash Your Hands Frequently

Practicing good hand hygiene is key to stopping the spread of flu viruses. Avoid touching your face (eyes, nose, or mouth) unless your hands are thoroughly cleaned. Remember to:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after touching shared surfaces like doorknobs, phones, keyboards, and desks.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser if soap and water are not available. Make sure the sanitiser contains at least 60% alcohol for it to be effective.

3. Keep Your Distance

During flu season, it’s wise to maintain a healthy distance from those who appear to be sick. The flu virus is highly contagious and spreads through droplets that can travel through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. To minimise your risk:

  • Stay at least six feet away from individuals showing symptoms of illness.
  • Avoid sharing personal items, including food, drinks, and utensils, particularly during flu season.

4. Boost Your Immune System

A strong immune system is your best defense against the flu. To boost your immune system and help prevent the flu, it’s essential to get enough sleep, aiming for 7-9 hours of quality rest each night, as this helps your body function at its best. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day is also crucial for maintaining your immune response. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and other nutrient-dense foods supports your overall health and immune system. Additionally, avoiding substances like alcohol and tobacco is important, as they can weaken your immune defenses, making it harder for your body to fight off infections.
