Why test for diabetes?

Diabetes testing is an important part of a Doctorcall health screen.  Diabetes is common and can be hidden.  If left unmanaged, it can lead to serious health complications  but with the right care it can be fully controlled and in some cases, the condition can even be reversed.

Our tests include  glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C)—these give a good indication of your glucose control.  Testing is about more than just diagnosing a condition; it’s about empowering you to make informed decisions for your future.

When should you consider testing?

Diabetes is a silent disease so you should be tested for it, preferably every year, especially if you have a family history or other risk factors.  Many patients have no symptoms, but when it becomes established, some symptoms may emerge.  They tend to do so gradually so they may not be noticed:

  • Feeling unusually thirsty
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight or muscle loss

Even if you don’t have symptoms but have a family history of diabetes or other risk factors, testing can provide reassurance and clarity. While type 2 diabetes is more common after the age of 40, younger people are increasingly being diagnosed—making regular health checks even more important.

Understanding diabetes

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes affect the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar, but they develop differently:

Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed in childhood and results from the body’s inability to produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is more common and develops over time, often due to lifestyle factors such as diet, lack of exercise, or elevated cholesterol levels.

No matter the type, early diagnosis is key to preventing complications and improving quality of life.

FAQ | Doctorcall Diabetes Test

What is a private diabetes test?

A private diabetes test is a tailored health service we provide to assess your blood sugar levels and overall metabolic health. Unlike standard NHS testing, our private diabetes tests are designed to be more accessible, with same-day appointments and results available. We bring the care to your doorstep, making the process stress-free and convenient.

What types of diabetes tests do you offer?

We test both glucose glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1C.)

  • Blood Glucose Test: This simply measures your glucose at a moment in time.  We recommend having a fasting blood glucose test having fasted for six hours (water, black tea or coffee permitted). A fasting glucose result more reproduceable and can be evaluated more precisely.
  • Glycosylated haemoglobin or HbA1c:  This measures the glucose which is bound to haemoglobin in your red blood cells.  Since it is bound irreversibly and since the life of a red cell is three months, HbA1c provides a measure of your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months.  This is valuable since glucose levels go up and down, particularly in diabetes, so a measurement at a moment in time does not always tell the whole story.

We would aim to provide an understanding of your risk factors and help you take proactive steps for your health.
